Self-Compassion or Self-Combustion

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are feeling stretched thin, balancing work, home life, and the endless demands of parenting. With all the uncertainty in our lives, whether it’s career shifts, health concerns, or just the pressures of modern life, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. We’re navigating a constantly changing landscape, and often without a clear roadmap.

When life feels out of control, we tend to grasp for whatever we can manage to regain a sense of balance. My advice, focus on what’s within your reach and let go of the rest. This mindset can help you find peace amidst the chaos.

While we may not have control over the big things, we can always control our approach. By shifting your mindset to focus on small, positive moments, you can change how you experience life. Whether it’s a quick walk outside, a quiet cup of coffee before the kids wake up, or simply carving out a few minutes for yourself, these little joys matter. Embrace them and use them to fuel your day.

At home, we live by a simple motto: “Do your best and always be kind.” Some days run smoothly, and others feel like survival mode. And that’s perfectly okay! We’ve learned to let go of the guilt that comes with trying to do it all, and instead, we focus on showing ourselves compassion. Remember, kindness starts with you. Self-care isn’t about putting yourself before others, it’s about giving yourself the grace to recharge so you can be there for those who need you.

Self-compassion and self-care are integral to self-preservation. Between technology burnout, work stress, and parenting challenges, it’s easy to feel drained. But taking time to care for yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Whether it’s setting boundaries, taking a break, or simply acknowledging that some days will be harder than others, these small acts of self-care can make all the difference.

Ask Yourself: “How would I treat a friend in this situation?” Then offer yourself that same kindness and understanding.

You’re doing an amazing job, and it’s okay to take a breath and recognize that.

Kindness is contagious, so let’s spread it far and wide! We’re all navigating our own struggles, and showing patience and understanding toward others can create a ripple effect of positivity.

I compiled a few of my favorite resources on how to manage emotions, find time for self-care and deal with fear and anxiety. I hope they help you as much as they have helped me.

Resources for practicing Self-Compassion

Here are some tools and reading materials that help me during times of chaos and stress.

Ask yourself “how would I treat a friend”? and treat yourself the same way.

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” Dalai Lama

Box Breathing is a 4 part breathing exercise focusing on taking, holding and releasing slow deep breaths. This technique is helpful for calming your nervous system, relieving anxiety and shifting your energy.

Yoga has many mental and physical health benefits. Decreased stressed and anxiety are some of the benefits of yoga. If it’s not something you are familiar or comfortable with consider trying something new. Taking on a new hobby will allow your mind to be distracted from your worries and help you focus on something positive.

Meditation is also a practice known for stress release. It is called a practice because with time and repetition it gets easier and more effective.

Unplug! I’m sure I’m not the only one glued to my phone since I’ve been stuck at home. Let me tell you this is not helping my mental state.

One major source of anxiety for many people is the constant bombardment of upsetting information via social media and traditional news. Limit your exposure to all media sources.

Books! We all have different outlets that we turn to for relaxation. For me reading has always been a way to escape and unwind. If you love to read as much as I do. Here are my latest favorite books.

Thank you for reading. May everyone stay happy, safe, healthy and sane.

With gratitude,

Polina
